Danser up front, Beauchman outside head up Bells' attack
By Kevin Sparrer
The Bells are ringing for another year, so it's time to strap on the pads and head back to the trenches. Football has started again, and Bellarmine is ready.

Coming off of a less than favorable season last year, when the Bells finished with a record just under .500 at 4-6, veteran head coach Mike Janda is looking for Bellarmine to have a winning season this year.

Bellarmine has six returning starters, two of them all-leaguers.

Jalal Beauchman (6-foot-4, 193 pounds) is a senior returner for the Bells at wide receiver. He was an all-league honorable mention pick last year in the tough West Catholic Athletic League.

Also returning is senior offensive and defensive tackle Tim Danser (6-foot-4, 277). Danser won second-team all-league honors as a junior.

The other four returning starters are Matt Zuniga (5-foot-11, 175) at quarterback and safety, Ben Ruder (6-foot-5, 214) at tight end and outside linebacker, Joe Borromeo (5-foot-8, 185) at running back and Matt Callahan (6-foot, 245) at offensive and defensive tackle.

Brennan Barker, a 6-foot, 175-pound center and nose guard, is returning for his senior year but was not a starter last season. Angelo Lonero (5-foot-7, 188) is a guard and linebacker returning for his junior season after spending his sophomore year on varsity. Mitch Lee (5-foot-10, 180) is guard and linebacker also coming back for his junior campaign after a year on varsity.

Coming up from the junior varsity team are three players who hope to make a difference for Bellarmine this season. Sophomore Brandon Warren (5-foot-6, 140) is a running back and corner; junior Andy Offorjebe (5-foot-11, 227) is a running back and defensive tackle; and junior Steve Powell (5-foot-10, 225) is an offensive and defensive tackle. Offorjebe and Powell are transfers coming in for their first year at Bellarmine.

Bellarmine hasn't won a title since 1997, but Janda has high hopes for his squad in the 2005 season.

"We have speed in the backfield from Joe Borromeo, Brandon Warren, Jalal Beauchman and Todd Lorell," Janda said. "We also have quickness in our offensive line with Mitch Lee and Angelo Lonero."

Lorell is a 5-foot-11, 179-pound senior in the Bellarmine backfield, and Lee is a 5-foot-10, 180-pound junior who will start at one guard spot with Lonero at the other.

The most experienced offensive lineman is three-year starter Danser.

Senior Andreas Drbal (6-foot-1, 177) will be returning to kick for the Bells this season.

Bellarmine will be working on a couple weaknesses before the season begins. The Bells will be doing as much as possible to bring repetitions to the inexperienced defense and to those offensive lineman who haven't seen a lot of varsity game time.

The Bells were to play their first preseason game against North Monterey County on Sept. 3. Their next game will be against Piedmont Hills at San José City College on Sept. 9, 7 p.m. The WCAL season won't begin until Sept. 30 for the Bells, who will host St. Ignatius at San José City College in that game. Janda is looking at Valley Christian and St. Francis as the league title favorites this fall.

The rest of the seniors on the squad include: 5-foot-10, 163-pound wide receiver and cornerback Jerame Renteria; 6-foot-4, 190-pound tight end and outside linebacker Joe Gutto; 6-foot, 190-pound Nick Becerra; 6-foot-2, 187-pound punter and kicker Connor Bernstein; 6-foot-3, 190-pound wide receiver and safety Rusty Wall; 5-foot-9, 194-pound guard and linebacker Luis Morengo; 6-foot-1, 200-pound guard and defensive tackle Spencer Vanderhoof; 6-foot-1, 195-pound offensive and defensive tackle Kyle Lewis; 6-foot-1, 236-pound offensive and defensive tackle Christian Horn; 6-foot, 232-pound offensive and defensive tackle Doug Mahoney; 6-foot-3, 230-pound Kendall Hall; 6-foot-1, 190-pound offensive and defensive tackle Robert Gonia; and 6-foot, 175-pound wide receiver and cornerback Bobby
Seddighzadeh.
